Dorm Decor Essentials

It's that time of year again, everyone is getting ready to go back to school.  A lot of you will either be starting college in a few weeks, or are going back to college which means one thing... everyone is scrambling to get all of the stuff for their dorm rooms!  If you are feeling completely lost when it comes to buying all of this stuff, don't worry, because I am going to give you some essentials that every dorm room should have.
1.  Twin XL Duvet Cover

The very first thing you should buy for your dorm room is your bedding.  Your bedding will determine your color scheme for everything else you will buy.  I highly suggest buying a duvet and duvet cover rather than a comforter.  A duvet cover is much easier to wash in case you spill something on it and it's also super easy to buy another duvet cover if you feel like changing up your room.  Don't be afraid to go really bold and bright with the colors and patterns, it will really liven up a drab dorm room!
PB Teen has some great options if you're willing to spend a little more money.  On the other hand, Target has some really inexpensive options that are also super cute!

2.  Mattress Protector

The next thing you should buy is a good mattress protector.  Please, please, please don't skip the mattress protector!  Bed bugs are a thing and dorm mattresses have been slept on by way too many people, yuck!  Protect yourself!
Bed Bath and Beyond is the place to go for this, they sell every type of mattress protector for any price range.

3.  Wall Decals

I love wall decals!  Most dorms don't allow you to put any holes in the walls so, you can't hang any artwork or whiteboards or anything.  Wall decals are a great solution!  They are super easy to just peel and stick onto the walls and are easily removable and can be used over and over again.
My favorite wall decals come from Wall Pops and are designed by Jonathan Adler.  I personally have the Elephant paisley collection hanging in my bedroom, and they are so cute!  Wall Pops also sells plain dots and stripes that come in every color imaginable and double as white boards.   Target also has some cool options like calendars that are even magnetic!

4.  Curtain Covers

A lot of dorm beds look like the one in the picture above.  They are raised above the ground so you can use the space underneath for storage in order to maximize space in the rest of the room.  This is great, but the only problem is that it tends to look a little messy.  To hide your mess you can use a tension rod across the bed frame, and hang some curtains so that your mess is easily hidden from others.
If you would like your bed to be taller so you have more storage room underneath it, I suggest buying some adjustable bed risers.  You can find some good inexpensive ones from Wal-Mart.

5.  Wax Warmer

Dorms also do not allow candles because in such a small space they can become a fire hazard.  I am a candle junkie and I love to scent my room with them.  A great alternative to a candle is a wax warmer, The heat of a light bulb melts the wax in the dish, so it scents a room without the fire hazard.
Yankee Candle sells inexpensive wax warmers and wax tarts that can be melted in the warmers.  If you don't want to buy the wax tarts you can always break up an old candle and use the wax pieces in the warmer instead!

6.   Fluffy Rug

The last thing that's great to have in your dorm room is a big fluffy rug.  Dorm room floors are cold and hard so it's great to have a big cozy rug to cover it and make the room feel more like home!
Ikea has great rug options with a huge selection of sizes, colors, and price ranges.
